From the looks of it, we have a bonafide Oscar juggernaut with Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio singled out as potential frontrunners in the acting categories. Gladstone, in particular, seems well positioned to run the gamut of Oscar season. Even if the film starts to pick up detractors here and there, praise for her has been unanimous. The viral video of her emotional reaction to the Cannes applause and standing-O coupled with the narrative that she almost quit the business make for an near-irresistible scenario for voters.
It’s always tricky to have to start the season at the top with nowhere to go but down, but the prestige involved here, along with the historical relevance, makes me think it has more than a good shot at holding onto its status in the months ahead, especially since we’ll be seeing more contenders in a few short months.
So far, the reviews coming out of Cannes have been positive, taking it to a 96 on Rotten Tomatoes:

The Cannes audience is going wild cheering for Martin Scorcese and the cast of Killers of the Flower Moon. Brilliant film. May be the longest standing ovation ever. The Applause sounds like hard rain on a rooftop.
Oscars for everyone.
Scorsese turned the story of the murders of the Osage Indians in Oklahoma into a mob allegory and a cinema classic at the same time. It’s a thrillingly intimate and powerful film that is the equal of any of the directors’ other hits and his best film since “Wolf of Wall Street.” Or maybe ever. Scorsese is a mind blowing director aided by editor Thelma Schoonmaker, another genius.
Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone lead a superb cast who are always spot on and insanely good as they tell this story, which really happened, and is adjacent to the tragic killings of Blacks in Tulsa that led to the Juneteenth memorials.

Killers Of The Flower Moon is to be savoured as elevated cinema, each frame a picture moving towards a goal. Not just in the more bravura camera sweeps, but the very construction of even the most — deceptively — simply-staged scenes.
The film will open in theaters in October before heading to AppleTV.
DiCaprio and De Niro have traditionally been muses for Martin Scorsese, and even if this isn’t as fast-paced as audiences are used to, it tells an important story and it’s one that many Americans don’t even really know about.
I would take much of the hype around it right now with a grain of salt. We have many months to go before the Oscar race settles in. Perhaps this is inevitable but making this movie the frontrunner, then feeling the need to take it down, is an ongoing drag of Oscar season every year.
Either way, it’s off to a great start.

Well, it’s over. Directing – maybe. Best Picture – nope. This film didn’t need to become a target this early.
I could see it get a shit-ton of nominations and leave the ceremony empty-handed as big-name prestige contenders are wont to do, or they could acknowledge the film (and native Americans) by awarding Gladstone and no one else à la Colman for The Favorite.
I think it’s between Barbie and Flower Moon for Best Picture.

I would not play down Sasha DUNE 2 or OPPENHEIMER …WHERE onlookers including same crowd cheering Killers of FM.. which I absolutely for as strong potential bedtime pic winner but pundits and experts saying OPPEMHEIMER is best written and potentially Nolan’s best film since The Dark KNIGHT. Civilian Murphy and support cast has the potential to be BIG TIME acting contender. Even Murphy admitted ” Nolan pushed my performance in a way I never done in any other role prior before.
Nevertheless…I allfor 7 time father ( deniro ( yes age 70 + he had 7th child ! And und err valued Dicaprio… .) And Scorsese to be in mix.
But DUNE 2 is really elephant in the room here it is biggest moat significant sci fi at it moat elaborate and inspired as one off pt II to the duology that won’t be made again.. a chance to right the wrongs of last year where TRUE GENUINE SCI FI OPUS epic breaks the mould forget last year.. that was more bout inclusivity not cinemas finest hour.. sorry but numbers and shit ratings prove my point …

there’s been one screening and it looks like there will be only one screening until it hits theaters. Will expectations become so immense they can’t possibly be met. To me this runs the risk of being that balloon that you fill too much and then it pops.

Michelle Yeoh over Cate Blanchett highly questionable and many still feel strongly Blanchett should have one a multifaceted performance where the actress challenged herself at multi dimensional levels elevating her performance from intense personal to her professional demeanor in one most challenging roles i can recall by any female lead in years as LYdia TAr…Yeoh probably was ‘i owe you’ for her decade of amazing FAR BETTER PERFORMANCES far MORE MEMORABLE than that enhanced by effects and editing and overbloated.. popup close ups and whirring camera effects..which frankly is what ENHANCED MOST PERFORMANCES IN THIS FILMS A DEEPLY SUPERFICIAL AND DIVISIVE OVERLAY..

3hrs 26 minutes! This is a RISKY scorsese project .. I bit shocked..maybe I should not be I Def for rhis being one of 4 big contenders but I be very wary of the Cannes crowd … this is the same crowd that elevates lesser Oscar contenders and had fae TOO big a say over the common sense mainstream critic educated non woke film goer for far tooo long or really Ur fault of the Academy going what Cannes audience or film critics do.
It genuinely time to question why the academy preferences favours film festivals contenders primarily over mainstream high quality straight to release cinema high quality blockbusters …

Scorsese Irishman was superb.. but there was a REASON it failed get Oscar attention : 2:
1. For film that calibre I was stunned barely got cinema release at moderate screening level
2. It had pacing problems namely despite vain effort to convey multi generational evolution. And aging of characters involved … it was far too long at over 3 hrs.
In Killers of Flower Moon an Oscar contender has be well paced as a frontrunner ..for argument sake just cos it ascorzese / deniro/ Dicaprio film if it doesn’t garner level public support such high profile calibre film SHOULD to make fair amount ny end of it run of 175 million we say 150 to be fair… domestically alone… and it due to pacing problems ..
I did some research everyone period is 5 yr period leading to formation of the FbI… out of Osage murders cases… so film. Set in 5 yr period … there is such a rhing as overplaying 5 day period regardless importance e historically of event for 5 year time frame in real time…
In contrast the Irishman had time span in it narrative of 30 + yrs.
Even thrn it was 25 mins too long at least!
So for it significance it importance historically if Killers of Flower Moon beyind it massive front line cast and filmmaker star power can’t KEEP an audience engrossed in centreless longer than first fortnight of it release ..it question. Has to ask 5 yr timespan = 3hr 26 min? That 6 Min longer than the two towers theatricL version!! But that run time length absolutely justified!
So maybe I wrong Killers of Flower Moon is indeed scrosese and de Niro and Dicaprio tour de for ce I hope OT is… but that doesn’t guarantee if a Oscar contender CANT FIND AND SUSTAIN EITHIN REASON broader cinematic appeal even within it target audience it be truly wider supported Oscar contender.

Lily Gladstone was so damn good in Certain Women. Happy to see her earning more widespread acclaim from critics for her work here. She’s a fantastic actress with an impressive ability to communicate so much with so few words. Her eyes have such restrained depth. I’m excited to see her performance in this, and I’m equally eager to let Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography wash over me.
